Food is Medicine!

You really can eat your way to glowing skin and vibrant health

Before there was medicine, there was food. Even today, the vast majority of drugs, healthcare, and skincare products are made up of natural ingredients…found in food! That’s why people who care about their health care about what they eat.

Because our skin is the body’s window to wellness, and because I’m the founder of one of the first doctor-created skincare companies, I’ve spent a lifetime researching the foods that do the most to promote healthy, hydrated, glowing skin—and overall vibrant health—from the inside out. Here are 10 of my favorite power-packed foods and what they can do for you.

  1. Goji berries, or wolf berries, are tiny berries from China that have been used in Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years because they confer a huge array of health benefits: they’re rich in the anti-oxidant beta-carotene and other phytonutrients that reduce inflammation, fight cancer, boost the immune system; and promote skin and eye health. They’re also a great source of essential fatty acids, trace minerals, and B vitamins. Various studies have shown that goji berries stabilize blood sugar, help detoxify the liver, and boost mood! Go, goji berries!
  2. Walnuts are a great source for cell-hydrating omega-3 fatty acids, which help cell membranes attract and hold water critical to rebuilding connective tissue.
  3. Eggs are an embryonic food containing lecithin, a vital nutrient that repairs tissue and helps the body build healthy new cells with strong cell membranes. They’re also a great source of protein, all packed in a handy, all-natural package. Hard-boiled eggs are among my favorite road foods!
  4. Pomegranates are hugely nutritious, packed with fiber, 3 grams of protein, 33% of the RDI for Vitamins C and K, 16% of the RDI for folate, and 12% of the RDI for potassium. Pomegranates are also a fantastic source of antioxidants, including punicalagins, which provide three times the antioxidant activity of red wine or green tea. They’re rich in punicic acid, a type of conjugated linoleic acid with powerful health effects, including protection against several of the factors implicated in heart disease. Pomegranates also contain compounds that lower blood pressure, protect against breast and prostate cancer, Pomegranates are also Mother Nature’s most abundant source of polyphenols. Growing evidence suggests that polyphenols help increase the effectiveness of sunscreens and prevent sunburns by decreasing the damaging effects of ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation on the skin.
  5. Cold-water fish and/or ground flaxseeds are both excellent sources of essential fatty acids, which are essential for brain health, cholesterol reduction, and healthy metabolism, among other things, and beneficial against a host of conditions ranging from asthma to arthritis. EFAs have powerful hydrating abilities and also support strong cell membranes and attracting water to cells.
  6. Apricots and/or mangos contain high amounts of Vitamin A, which, among other benefits, optimizes the lifecycle of skin cells.
  7. Broccoli and spinach are both great sources of alpha lipoic acid, a powerful antioxidant/anti-inflammatory that helps many of the body’s systems to run more efficiently.
  8. Brown rice is an excellent source of fiber that contains glycosaminoglycans, which are essential in building and maintaining connective tissue.
  9. Pumpkin, sesame, and sunflower seeds are additional embryonic foods. These contain L-Carnitine, which transports fatty acids to cells where they are metabolized, serving a dual purpose of fat burning and cell strengthening.
  10. Lentils are cholesterol-lowering, fiber-rich foods that provide abundant amounts of six important minerals, two B-vitamins, and protein—all with virtually no fat.

Before there was medicine, there was food! In many respects, you really are what you eat. (And how you sleep, exercise, and manage stress.)
